LEGAZPI City— Legazpi Auxiliary Bishop-Emeritus Lucilo Quiambao reminded the youth on the importance of the Bible during the 3rd day Mass of the National Conference for Youth Ministers (NCYM) at the St. Raphael Parish.

Quiambao encouraged the youth to immerse themselves in the Word of God as the Bible serves as a personal guide and forms youngsters as missionaries.

Being engrossed in the word of God, he said, helps create missionary awareness among young people.

Legazpi Auxiliary Bishop-Emeritus Lucilo Quiambao reminding the youth ministers that “ignorance of the bible is ignorance of God’ in his homily for the 3rd day of the National Conference for Youth Ministers (NCYM) held in Legazpi City.

In a master-student relationship, the bible serves as a disciple’s manual, the bishop said.

“The instructions we received from it [are unlimited] as its teachings include various aspects such as spiritual, emotional, moral, creational, fraternal and eternal. The Word of God challenges young people to renounce themselves and go beyond their comfort zones,” added Quiambao.

“Ignorance of the bible is ignorance of God. The bible can make you face life [squarely], it makes you a good Christian. Sabi nga ng mga kabataan ngayong panahon, ang walang cell phone, walang direction. Pero ang sabi ko naman, kailanman, ang walang bible, hindi stable [The youth of this generation say, those who do not have mobile phones, don’t have direction, but I say to them, those who do not have a bible, are not stable],” he said.

“With the rapid advancement and people’s mobility in science and technology, the youth today clings with technology and is no longer focused in evangelizing. Everything will become mobile and these youngsters are into virtual friends rather than real friends as a part of the social networking platforms,” Quiambao said.

He pointed out that the new generation are consumers with unlimited choices and can easily be influenced by brands or advertisement.

“In the Gospel, Christ [refers] to the unnecessary worldly possessions as a hindrance to one’s mission. You young people, your duty is to preach the Kingdom of God and declare him [to everyone]. But nowadays, I observed that young people are incapable [of making] a permanent commitment,” Quiambao said.

The bishop also gave a historical background on the establishment of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines particularly the Episcopal Commission on Youth where two Legazpi bishops served the said commission―Bishop-Emeritus Jose Sorra and the current ECY Chairman Bishop Joel Baylon.

He also said that having chosen Legazpi City as the venue for NCYM made an impact to the diocese because the youthful presence of the young rejuvenated the faithful.

Skit on Calungsod

Meanwhile, the Legazpi youth presented a skit on Blessed Pedro Calungsod ‘with a twist’ in the evening of October 3.

The theatrical play was a concerted effort of the Legazpi diocesan youth commission and the National Secretariat for Youth Apostolate (NSYA) of CBCP Episcopal Commission on Youth who conceptualized the skit to become a play.

“The activity focused on Pedro Calungsod who will be canonized this coming October 21 in Rome and he needs to be venerated by the youth as their model for evangelization,” said Fr. Anselmo Bobier Jr., youth director of the diocese of Legazpi.

“The twists as you have seen the play was the segments of reflection. It was conceptualized to pause after every segment for a moment of reflection so that the play will not be heavy,” Bobier added. (Jandel Posion)
